Kalins Furniture, a furniture store in Sarasota, reports that it is closing after 66 years of serving the area. A going out of business sale at the store, managed by Planned Furniture Promotions (PFP), commences Fri., Mar. 4.
Kalins is the oldest continually run, family-owned retailer in Florida.
Founded in 1950 by Ed Kalin and his wife, Alyce, Kalins Furniture operated for most of its history as Kanes of Sarasota. In 2013, the Kalin family chose the new name of Kalins Furniture to end the confusion between Kanes of Sarasota and similarly named stores in Florida.
Ed Kalin announced his retirement earlier this year. The family considered a possible expansion before making the decision to close. An expanded presence would be necessary to remain competitive in this market, according to a family spokesperson.
“Our search for a company that could give us a fresh perspective on a high-impact sale ended when we met PFP, “ says Mindy Kaufman. “As a 50-plus year-old company that specializes in furniture promotions of all sizes and kinds, with company values very much like our own, we felt extremely comfortable with them and confident that they would help us create our best sales ever.”
As we all know, Kalins is well-known for its creative, award-winning interior decorating for private residences and model homes. The retailer’s slogan is “Your Dream, Your Style, Our Focus.”
“We are a full-service furniture store, voted winners of the Sarasota Herald Tribune’s Best Furniture Store award for 16 years in row,” said Jeff Kalin, co-owner of the store with his father Ed. “At Kalins Furniture, we are committed to helping you achieve your dream of home, while expressing your unique style. We have something to suit anyone’s taste and budget, as well as a professional staff to assist you.”
One key element of Kalins’ success is its deep involvement in the Sarasota community. In 1988, Ed Kalin was honored with the local Anti-Defamation League’s Distinguished Community Service Award, and he later received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jewish National Fund. Alyce Kalin was just as active in the community, serving on the board of the Van Wezel Foundation and the Sarasota-Manatee Jewish Federation. The couple also supported a wide range of other local organizations, including the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, Ringling School of Art and Design and the Sarasota-Manatee Arch Family Holocaust Education Center.
More importantly, Kalins Furniture offers a wide variety of furniture and bedding products from well-known brands such as Lexington, Tommy Bahama, Universal, Stanley, Hooker, Bernhardt, Theodore Alexander, ART and Artistica.
